How to Print a Google Docs Manuscript

Wrote your book in Google Docs? Turning that manuscript into a real, printed book takes a few minutes — the trick is setting it up right before you export.

Google Docs is a lovely place to write a book. It just needs a little setup before it becomes a printable one. Do these steps in order and you'll have a clean, print-ready PDF at the end.

1

Set your page size first

This is the one that matters most. Google Docs defaults to US Letter, but for the cleanest fit set it to A4 (or A5 for a smaller book): File → Page setup → Paper size. Do this before you finish laying things out, so nothing shifts later.

2

Make page 1 your cover

Add a title page at the very start — book title and your name. That first page becomes the front cover of the printed book.

3

Tidy the manuscript

Start each chapter on a fresh page with Insert → Break → Page break, pick a comfortable reading font and size, and leave the default margins (they keep your text safely clear of the edges). Aim for at least 20 pages.

4

Export as a PDF

File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf). You'll get a single PDF with every page, in order — that's your book.

5

Upload it to us

Drop the PDF on the homepage, choose softcover or hardcover, and we print and ship the real thing to your door.

The one thing people forget: the page size. If you export while it's still on US Letter, your book will be printed at the nearest size we offer (usually A4) — fine, but setting A4 or A5 yourself gives you exactly the book you designed. It's a 10-second change and worth doing first.
